Perryhan Ashmawi [ Artist Bio ]

Perryhan Al Ashmawi was born in Bahrain in 1988 to Egyptian parents. She grew up with a strong desire to pursue art and in 2009 she attained a BA in Fine Art from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, majoring in Painting and Drawing.

The artistic style that Perryhan has developed simultaneously reflects her affinity towards her traditional, Middle Eastern background as well as her ‘westernized’ tendencies. She believes that great art often emerges at the crossroads of differing cultures; that is to say, when varying cultures overlap in their beliefs but express these beliefs in differing ways. Therefore, Perryhan often merges pop culture with a more traditional style of painting. The inspiration she draws from both urban as well as decorative art is apparent as her work typically juxtaposes ornamental, symbolic and graffiti-like elements.

At times, the resulting work is a contemplative reminder of the manner in which societal defects- egotism, commercialism and materialism- have a detrimental effect on the individual and consequently, on our self- awareness.

Paste it

“ Paste it” is a project aiming to develop the street-art scene in Kingdom of Bahrain. The participants, painters, poets, calligraphers, photographers and designers, would practice wheat pasting via different medias and methods around the Capital Governance, to beautify the area, encourage and help people acknowledge the power of art.

One of the main objectives of this project is to transform the local skills into interactive tourist attractions for locals and internationals residents and visitors in shape of murals.
